Gujarat Titans' Match Takes Twist as Umpire Enforces Bat Size Rule
Unexpected Bat Size Violation in IPL 2026
During the IPL 2026 match between the Gujarat Titans and the Punjab Kings in New Chandigarh, an unusual incident occurred when batter Rahul Tewatia was called out by the on-field umpire for not adhering to the bat size regulations. This incident unfolded in the penultimate over of the first innings, right after Washington Sundar's dismissal, as Tewatia stepped up to bat. Before he could face a delivery, the umpire conducted a bat gauge check—a standard practice in international cricket that has been adopted in the IPL since the previous season.
After failing the gauge test, Tewatia was instructed to switch his bat before continuing. This moment was later shared by broadcasters on social media, quickly gaining traction online. Since April 2025, IPL officials have been implementing bat gauge checks to ensure compliance with size regulations. Although the organizers did not formally announce this change, it is believed to be aimed at maintaining a fair balance between bat and ball, preventing players from using oversized bats for an unfair edge.
The England and Wales Cricket Board first introduced this regulation in 2018. According to Law 5 of the Marylebone Cricket Club's Laws of Cricket, bat dimensions are strictly controlled: the width must not exceed 10.8 cm (4.25 inches), the overall depth cannot surpass 6.7 cm (2.64 inches), and the edges must remain under 4 cm (1.56 inches).
Punjab Kings Triumph Over Gujarat Titans
In their IPL 2026 opener held in Mullanpur, the Punjab Kings secured a three-wicket victory against the Gujarat Titans, thanks to a stellar performance from debutant Cooper Connolly, who scored a composed 72 runs off 44 balls. In a challenging chase of 163 runs, the 22-year-old Australian played a crucial role, stabilizing the innings amidst falling wickets and ensuring that PBKS remained on track when the match seemed to be slipping away.
