Gujarat Titans' Coach Anticipates Local Talent Impact in IPL Clash
Patel Advocates for Local Players Sharma and Suthar
Parthiv Patel, the assistant coach of Gujarat Titans (GT), expressed optimism regarding the contributions of local players Ashok Sharma and Manav Suthar in their upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Saturday.
During a pre-match press briefing, Patel highlighted the potential of pacer Ashok Sharma, who has shown impressive performances in both IPL and domestic competitions, such as the Mushtaq Ali and Vijay Hazare Trophy for Rajasthan. He emphasized that local players often benefit from their familiarity with the playing conditions, stating that Ashok is a promising talent for the future. The 23-year-old has participated in six IPL 2026 matches for Gujarat Titans, securing six wickets. In the recent Ranji Trophy season, he achieved 14 wickets across seven matches with an average of 29.71.
"Ashok Sharma is an exceptional bowler. His performances in the IPL have been commendable, and we've observed his skills in the Mushtaq Ali and Vijay Hazare Trophy. Local players possess an advantage due to their understanding of the game. He is undoubtedly a strong prospect moving forward," Patel remarked.
Patel also commended left-arm spinner Manav Suthar, noting his consistent presence in the India A team and his solid performances in domestic cricket. He described Suthar as a seasoned player who has effectively led Rajasthan in domestic competitions, earning his chances through impressive displays. In the 2025/26 Ranji Trophy season, Suthar took 18 wickets in just five innings, averaging 15.94. Patel pointed out that several local players, including Kulwant Khejroliya, are part of the team, reinforcing the advantage of being familiar with home conditions.
"Manav has been a consistent performer for a long time. He regularly plays for India A and has been performing well. This season, he has had the opportunity to showcase his skills. He is a mature player who has led Rajasthan effectively. There are several local talents here, including Kulwant from Jaipur. Familiarity with the home ground is crucial," Patel added.
Crucial Match for Playoff Aspirations
Patel labeled the forthcoming match as critical, noting the tight competition on the points table, where most teams are closely matched, with only the top team having played an additional game. He acknowledged Rajasthan's strong performance but emphasized that his team's focus is on executing their strategies effectively to secure a victory.
"This is undoubtedly an important game, as you mentioned. Almost all teams are on similar points, with one team at the top having played one extra match. Given Rajasthan's form, we aim to execute our plans and strive for a win," Patel stated.
Currently, Gujarat Titans sit fifth on the IPL points table, facing fourth-placed Rajasthan Royals at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium. Both teams have played 10 matches, achieving six victories each, with net run rate being the only differentiator in their standings. The winner of this match will move closer to solidifying their position in the top four.
