Graeme Smith Predicts Abhishek Sharma's Rise in IPL 2026 Orange Cap Race
Smith Backs Abhishek Sharma for Orange Cap
Graeme Smith, the former captain of South Africa and current Commissioner of the SA20 League, has expressed his belief that Abhishek Sharma of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) will outshine his teammate Heinrich Klaasen in the race for the Orange Cap during the ongoing IPL 2026 season.
Currently, Klaasen leads the run charts with 494 runs at an impressive average of 54.88, while Abhishek follows closely with 475 runs at an average of 47.50. Smith argues that Abhishek's position as an opener gives him an advantage, as he has more opportunities to recover from any dips in form.
Insights on the Orange Cap Competition
Smith noted that openers typically enjoy more time at the crease, which can be beneficial for regaining form, especially on batting-friendly pitches. He stated, "This season has seen an exciting competition for the Orange Cap, and despite Klaasen's recent struggles, I believe Abhishek Sharma has a strong chance to take the lead."
He emphasized that players at the top of the order can quickly bounce back from poor performances, particularly on surfaces that favor batting.
Praise for Abhishek's Aggressive Play
Smith commended Abhishek Sharma for his aggressive batting style, particularly his ability to score runs through the offside. He remarked on the fearless nature of today's young cricketers, who often attack from the outset of their innings.
"Sharma plays a lot more square than most batters, especially over the off-side. The current generation of players shows a remarkable lack of fear, consistently going for runs from the very beginning," he added.
Klaasen's Return to Form
Smith expressed satisfaction with Klaasen's resurgence after a less-than-stellar performance in the SA20 Season 4, where he scored only 138 runs at an average of 19.71. Klaasen, who was the first to reach 1000 runs in SA20 history, currently ranks fourth in the league's all-time run-scorers with 1146 runs from 42 matches.
In the IPL 2026 season, Klaasen has returned to form, hitting 36 boundaries and 23 sixes from 314 balls faced. Smith acknowledged his concerns about Klaasen's form over the past year and a half but praised his strong performance in the IPL, noting that his contributions have been vital for SRH, who currently sit second in the points table.
Donovan Ferreira Shines as a Finisher
Smith also highlighted the impressive performances of Donovan Ferreira, a South African player who has made a name for himself as a finisher in the IPL. After spending previous seasons as a fringe player at the Rajasthan Royals, Ferreira has solidified his role with the Joburg Super Kings this season.
His ability to hit sixes during the death overs has been a standout feature of his game, as he shares the record for the most sixes (13) in this phase with Tim David, while Klaasen follows closely with 12. Ferreira's recent innings include an unbeaten 52 off 26 balls against the Punjab Kings and a remarkable 47 not out off just 14 balls against the Delhi Capitals, showcasing his explosive batting style.
"I was pleased to see Donovan Ferreira help his team secure a win recently. It's crucial to have multiple players in good form as we approach the tournament's critical stages, as securing a top-four position is always challenging," Smith concluded.
