Mexico City, June 12: A remarkable chapter in football history unfolded at the Mexico City Stadium as the FIFA World Cup 2026 commenced. At the tender age of 17, Gilberto Mora made his mark by becoming the youngest player to don the Mexican national jersey, El Tri, during their opening match victory against South Africa.

The pivotal moment came in the 65th minute when Mora was substituted in, igniting a thunderous cheer from the home crowd, which included renowned boxer Canelo Alvarez.

At 17 years and 240 days, Mora is now the sixth-youngest player to appear in a World Cup, following legends like Pele and Samuel Eto’o, who made their debuts at even younger ages.

Hailing from Tuxtla Gutierrez in southern Mexico and developed at Tijuana, Mora made his professional debut shortly before his 16th birthday. Since then, he has soared to prominence, breaking age records in Liga MX and showcasing his talent at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile 2025, where Mexico reached the quarter-finals.

His rise with El Tri began at the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup, where coach Javier Aguirre placed his faith in him during critical matches. Mora debuted against Saudi Arabia in the quarter-finals, making history as the youngest player to represent Mexico's senior team, and assisted Raul Jimenez for a crucial goal in the semi-finals against Honduras.

The 17-year-old is distinguished by his exceptional game intelligence, ability to read plays, and skillful ball control. He possesses not only raw talent but also the poise and creativity to thrive under pressure, making him a valuable asset to an experienced Mexican squad.
