Germany's Ambassador Reflects on World Cup Setback Against Ecuador
Ambassador Describes Loss as 'Disappointing'
Philipp Ackermann, the German Ambassador to India, expressed disappointment over Germany's recent loss to Ecuador in the FIFA World Cup 2026. He emphasized that this defeat does not significantly alter the team's position in their group. Ecuador entered the match following a 1-0 loss to the Ivory Coast and a goalless draw with Curacao. Despite being underdogs against the already-qualified German team, Ecuador managed to secure a 2-1 victory on June 25 (local time).
Looking Forward: Knockout Stage Challenges
In an interview, Ackermann noted that Germany had a strong start to the tournament despite the setback against Ecuador. He stated, "We began quite well, but the loss to Ecuador was disappointing. However, I don't believe it affects our group ranking significantly." He also highlighted the potential challenge of facing France in the Round of 16, acknowledging their strength as a team.
Tournament Format and Viewing Challenges
The ambassador commented on the expanded 48-team format of the tournament, describing it as somewhat overwhelming. He mentioned the difficulties posed by match timings for Indian viewers, saying, "It's quite large, and the timings are challenging for us in India, requiring late-night viewings."
Ecuador's Remarkable Comeback
In the match itself, Ecuador achieved a historic 2-1 comeback against Germany. Germany initially took the lead with a goal from Leroy Sane, assisted by Florian Wirtz. However, Ecuador equalized shortly after with a long-range shot from Nilson Angulo in the ninth minute. Gonzalo Plata then netted the winning goal in the 77th minute following a set-piece, securing Ecuador's advancement to the knockout stage for only the second time in their World Cup history.
