Gautam Gambhir's Coaching Future in Indian Test Cricket Under Scrutiny

Gautam Gambhir's coaching tenure in Indian cricket has been marked by success in white-ball formats but challenges in Test cricket. Following a disappointing series against South Africa, speculation arises about his future, especially with VVS Laxman being approached for the role. With the T20 World Cup approaching, the BCCI is expected to reassess Gambhir's position based on performance. The Indian dressing room is reportedly feeling uncertain, with players concerned about their roles under Gambhir's leadership. As the IPL looms, the next few months will be pivotal for Gambhir's coaching career.

Gambhir's Mixed Record in Coaching

Gautam Gambhir has made a notable impact as India's white-ball coach, securing both an ICC and ACC trophy in each format. However, his record in Test cricket tells a different story, with ten losses against SENA nations.

Following India's disappointing performance against South Africa in a recent two-Test series at home, a key figure in the cricket board informally reached out to VVS Laxman to gauge his interest in taking over the red-ball team.

Despite this, Laxman appears content in his role as the 'Head of Cricket' at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.

Future of Gambhir's Contract

Gambhir's current contract with the BCCI extends until the conclusion of the 2027 ODI World Cup. However, this could be reassessed based on India's performance in the upcoming T20 World Cup, set to begin in five weeks.

Within BCCI circles, there remains uncertainty about whether Gambhir is the right fit to lead the red-ball team through the remaining nine Tests of the World Test Championship cycle from 2025 to 2027.

Upcoming Challenges for India

India recently drew a five-Test series in England 2-2 and has several overseas challenges ahead, including two Tests against Sri Lanka in August 2026 and a tour of New Zealand in October, followed by a five-Test series against Australia in early 2027.

A source from the BCCI noted, 'Gambhir has strong support within Indian cricket's power structure. If India either retains the T20 World Cup or reaches the finals, he will likely continue in his role. However, it remains to be seen if he will also lead in Test matches.'

Concerns in the Dressing Room

Currently, the Indian dressing room is experiencing a sense of uncertainty, with many players feeling less secure under Gambhir's leadership compared to the clearly defined roles during Rahul Dravid's tenure.

During Dravid's three years, players were given ample opportunities to showcase their abilities.

The exclusion of Shubman Gill from the T20 World Cup squad has raised eyebrows, with many players concerned that if a rising star like Gill can be left out, anyone could be next.

BCCI's Decision-Making Timeline

The BCCI is known for taking its time with policy decisions. After the T20 World Cup, the Indian Premier League will follow, providing BCCI officials ample opportunity to evaluate India's performance and decide on coaching structures, whether to split coaching roles or maintain a single coach across formats.

The next couple of months will be crucial for 'Guru Gambhir,' even with his supporters within the BCCI.
