Prior to their current roles, Gambhir and Rohit were teammates for several years in the Indian squad. They played crucial roles in securing India's first T20 World Cup victory in 2007, with Gambhir scoring 75 runs and Rohit contributing a vital 30 runs off 16 balls in the final against Pakistan, setting the stage for a memorable win.

Building Trust and Respect

Over the course of their careers, Gambhir and Rohit participated in 61 international matches together before Gambhir's retirement from professional cricket in 2018. This extensive collaboration fostered a strong foundation of trust and respect, which has now evolved into their current coaching and leadership dynamic.

When Gambhir took on the role of head coach in 2024, Rohit was already leading the team in ODIs and Tests after stepping back from T20Is following India's triumph in the 2024 T20 World Cup.

In a discussion on JioStar, Gambhir emphasized that his relationship with Rohit transcends the typical coach-captain dynamic, rooted instead in years of shared experiences. He stated, "Rohit and I have known each other since he joined the team, and our relationship has been built on that history."

Gambhir further clarified, "I am not a foreign coach unfamiliar with Rohit’s playing style or personality; our connection is deep and personal."

Reflecting on their long-standing partnership, Gambhir noted that their familiarity allows for seamless communication, reducing the friction often seen in new coach-captain relationships.
