Gaurav Kumar Shines in Chennai Bulls' Victory, Eyes Playoff Success
Gaurav Kumar's Impactful Debut with Chennai Bulls
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 27: Gaurav Kumar, the newest addition to the Chennai Bulls, made an impressive debut as a replacement player, contributing significantly to their 40-21 victory over the Kalinga Black Tigers at the Shahaji Raje Bhosle Kreeda Sankul (Andheri Sports Complex) on Thursday.
This win secured the Chennai Bulls a strong finish in the league stage, marking their sixth victory and placing them second on the points table. Following the match, Gaurav shared his thoughts on his early experiences in the GMR RPL.
“Initially, I felt some pressure. I was anxious about playing alongside Olympic medalists and what that experience would entail. However, after our first match, it started to feel more natural,” he expressed in a statement.
Reflecting on his journey into rugby, Gaurav recounted, “I was introduced to the sport at 14 in Patna. My time in Odisha was enjoyable and boosted my confidence. I represented Bihar for the first time and earned my first medal in the U-18 category. My passion for the game grew from there, leading me to become a senior player for Bihar.”
His determination led him to join the India camp multiple times, culminating in his representation of the country at the Asian Championship in 2022. “I was part of the Indian U-17 camp but didn’t make the final cut. Despite my disappointment, I persevered and eventually joined the Indian Rugby 15s team in 2022, where I was the top scorer in the Asian Championship third division,” he shared.
Now serving as the head coach for the Bihar rugby team, Gaurav began coaching at just 19, taking charge of the Bihar U-18s. He discussed the potential impact of the GMR RPL on rugby in India.
“This league will significantly influence young Indian players. Rugby has its popularity in certain areas, and this league will enhance that visibility as many Indians are tuning in and aspiring to participate. The excitement among players is palpable as they prepare for the league,” he noted.
Gaurav also highlighted key lessons learned during his time with the Chennai Bulls. “Trusting your teammates is crucial; allow them to play their game and communicate when mistakes happen. I’ve learned that there’s no pressure; enjoyment is key. Being brave is essential, and our coach and experienced players encourage us to keep pushing forward. They support us in correcting our mistakes, which fosters a caring team environment,” he explained.
As the playoffs approach, Gaurav hinted at the Chennai Bulls' strategy. “Our focus is now on the playoffs. Some players who have excelled will rest to prepare for the semi-finals and finals. We are ready for the challenge ahead. While our coach has a game plan, I can’t reveal too much,” he concluded.
