Frances Tiafoe delivered an incredible performance at the US Open, overcoming a two-set deficit and a 0-3 score in the fifth set to triumph over fellow American Alex Michelsen with scores of 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6(10-6) during a gripping quarterfinal match.

The 28-year-old athlete fought hard for four hours and 38 minutes at Arthur Ashe Stadium, marking his third semifinal appearance at the US Open, having previously reached this stage in 2022 and 2024, as noted on the ATP website. Tiafoe has now become the first American man in this century to achieve three semifinal appearances at the US Open, equaling the record set by Andre Agassi, who accomplished this feat in 2002, 2003, and 2005.

Match Highlights

Michelsen, who had breezed through the tournament without losing a set, seemed poised for victory when he served for the match at 5-4 in the third set. However, two double faults allowed Tiafoe to break back and equalize at 5-5. Michelsen managed to save a set point with an ace at 5-6, but Tiafoe seized the momentum, winning four consecutive games to clinch the third set 7-5.

After taking the fourth set 6-3, Tiafoe forced a decisive fifth set, but Michelsen surged ahead with a 3-0 lead. Tiafoe, however, refused to back down and ultimately triumphed in the tiebreak, winning 10-6.

Despite Michelsen accumulating more total points than Tiafoe, 173 to 170, Tiafoe emerged victorious for the third consecutive time in their encounters. The match was intense, featuring 40 break points, with both players breaking serve eight times.

Following his win, Tiafoe celebrated enthusiastically before offering consolation to a visibly emotional Michelsen at the net.
