France Coach Provides Updates on Mbappe and Saliba Ahead of World Cup Friendlies
Fitness Updates on Key Players
Didier Deschamps, the head coach of France, shared insights regarding the fitness of star players Kylian Mbappe and William Saliba as they prepare for their pre-FIFA World Cup friendlies. He noted that Mbappe is 'in excellent physical and mental condition,' while Saliba will be absent from the upcoming friendly against the Ivory Coast. France is set to compete in Group I alongside Senegal, Iraq, and Norway, kicking off their campaign against Senegal on June 16 in New Jersey. Following their victory in the 2018 World Cup and a second-place finish in 2022, France is considered one of the tournament favorites.
Challenging End to the Club Season
Both players faced a tough conclusion to their 2025-26 club season. Mbappe ended the season without any trophies at Real Madrid, facing backlash from fans. Meanwhile, Saliba, a vital player in Arsenal's first Premier League title in over two decades, concluded his season with a penalty shootout loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League final held in Budapest, missing out on a potential historic double. Additionally, Saliba is dealing with a late back injury, raising concerns for the national team.
Deschamps Comments on Mbappe's Readiness
During a press conference on Wednesday, Deschamps praised Mbappe, who has been a standout player for France in the last two World Cups. He stated, 'Kylian is in great shape, both physically and mentally. He has been in communication with the team as their captain. While club football is important, representing the national team is a different experience. This is his third World Cup, and he is handling it well.'
Saliba's Absence from the Ivory Coast Match
Regarding Saliba's injury, Deschamps confirmed that although he is 'doing well,' he will not participate in the friendly against the Ivory Coast. 'William is progressing well. If we had a match on Thursday, he could have played. However, I need to manage the playing time carefully, even if it affects our team chemistry. All 26 players are fit, and this friendly serves as a preparation for the upcoming match against Northern Ireland in four days,' he explained.
Formation Plans Ahead of the World Cup
Deschamps also mentioned that he has a starting lineup in mind as they approach the World Cup. 'Yes, I have a lineup in my thoughts. However, with two matches before the tournament, circumstances may change. Every player is eager to start, and we must be mindful of any frustration this may cause. Given the unique conditions in the United States and the time between matches, we will gather more insights,' he added.
