The Anticipated Return of Formula 1 to India

Formula 1 (F1) has garnered a substantial fan base globally, including in India. However, the nation has not hosted a race since 2013. The Indian Grand Prix was held at the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida from 2011 to 2013, but the event was discontinued due to taxation issues and insufficient government backing. Now, after a long hiatus of 14 years, there are indications that F1 may return to India.

Sports Minister Confirms F1's Return in 2027

Mansukh Mandaviya, the Minister of Sports for India, has announced plans to reintroduce Formula 1 to the country in 2027, marking 14 years since the last Indian Grand Prix. The event is expected to take place at the Buddh International Circuit. However, the government must secure financial backing, infrastructure improvements, and necessary permissions within the next six months. Mandaviya stated, "Our goal is to bring F1 back to India. We need financial and infrastructure support, and permissions are essential, with a six-month timeline to achieve this." Notably, in all three previous Indian Grand Prix events, the now-retired Sebastian Vettel from Red Bull Racing claimed victory.

Adani Group's Role in Reviving the Circuit

The Buddh International Circuit was previously owned by the Jaypee Group, which has since dissolved, leading to the Indian government taking over its maintenance. The Adani Group is now poised to acquire all assets of the Jaypee Group, including the race track. Gautam Adani, the Managing Director of the Adani Group, expressed enthusiasm about the prospect of bringing Formula 1 back to India. He remarked, "I'm very excited... the Buddh circuit is part of the deal. I am personally committed to reviving Formula 1 in India, as there is significant interest and potential for the sport here."
