Following France's fourth-place finish in the FIFA World Cup 2026, Didier Deschamps has stepped down after a remarkable 14-year tenure as the head coach of the national team. In a significant move, Zinedine Zidane, widely regarded as one of the greatest players in French football history, has been appointed as his successor. The French Football Federation (FFF) has confirmed Zidane's return to management with a four-year contract that extends until the FIFA World Cup 2030.

Deschamps' impressive reign included leading France to victory in the 2018 World Cup and a runner-up finish in 2022, culminating in a fourth-place finish this year. With his departure, Zidane, who was a teammate of Deschamps during the 1998 World Cup win, steps into a role he has long aspired to. Since leaving Real Madrid in May 2021, Zidane has turned down numerous lucrative club offers to remain available for this opportunity. "The France job was the only one I wanted," he stated during his unveiling at the FFF headquarters in Paris.

During his introductory press conference, Zidane expressed his excitement, saying, "For me, it's an immense joy... about being able to become the coach of this French team. I don't have any other words. I'm holding myself back because I have so many emotions inside me. I'm ready for the challenge, that's what drives me today."

Although this marks Zidane's first role in international management, his club coaching record is remarkable. He has secured 11 major trophies during two successful stints at Real Madrid, including three consecutive UEFA Champions League titles, a feat unmatched in modern football.

Zidane's managerial journey will kick off in the UEFA Nations League, with his first match against Turkey on September 25, followed by a game against Belgium three days later. His inaugural home match will be held at the Stade de France against Italy.
