Vozinha's Mother Secures Visa to Attend 2026 FIFA World Cup Matches
Visa Granted for Vozinha's Mother
The mother of Cape Verde football star Vozinha has successfully obtained a visa to the United States, allowing her to witness the 2026 FIFA World Cup matches. This comes after she missed watching her son’s impressive performance against Spain on June 15, where he was awarded Player of the Match (POTM) during their World Cup debut, which ended in a 0-0 draw in Atlanta. Vozinha's remarkable display included seven saves, leading to a clean sheet and setting multiple records.
Following the match, Vozinha expressed his emotions, revealing that his mother was unable to attend due to visa complications. He shared, “I cried after the game because I grew up with my grandparents, who are no longer with us. My mom couldn’t be here either because of the visa issue and the costs involved. We couldn’t manage it in time.”
House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries announced the visa approval, stating that the fee has been waived. He expressed gratitude to Secretary Rubio, U.S. State Department officials, the Cabo Verde government, and FIFA for their collaboration in resolving the issue. The U.S. State Department confirmed that their visa team in Praia is actively assisting Vozinha's mother.
Currently, Cape Verde faces a challenge with the 'Visa Bond Pilot Program,' which requires individuals from 50 countries, including Cape Verde, to post a bond ranging from $5,000 to $15,000 to obtain a tourist visa for the U.S. Vozinha's team is set to play against Uruguay next on June 22 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
