Thierry Henry Critiques Cristiano Ronaldo's Performance in World Cup Opener
Ronaldo's Struggles Against DR Congo
Thierry Henry, the legendary French footballer, has expressed his disappointment with Cristiano Ronaldo's performance during Portugal's opening match against DR Congo in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Despite the significance of the match for DR Congo, who were participating in their first World Cup since 1974, Ronaldo's display was lackluster. He managed only three attempts on goal and lost possession three times, missing several clear opportunities.
Henry, who is currently serving as a football analyst for the tournament, criticized Ronaldo for prioritizing his own scoring over team play. He emphasized the importance of teamwork, stating, "It's crucial for the team to score, not just for one player to focus on scoring. Ronaldo's desire to score led him to obstruct plays that could have benefited the team. If he had made the right runs, it could have opened up opportunities for his teammates, like Bruno Fernandes, who could have easily scored," Henry explained during his commentary.
This match marked a significant milestone for Ronaldo, as he became only the second player, alongside Lionel Messi, to participate in six FIFA World Cups. However, his struggles on the field overshadowed this achievement. In contrast, Messi had a standout performance against Algeria, netting a hat-trick.
Portugal's Upcoming Matches
Looking ahead, Portugal is set to face Uzbekistan on June 23 at the Houston Stadium, followed by a match against Colombia, currently ranked 14th, on June 28 at the Miami Stadium. Historically, Portugal has never reached a FIFA World Cup final, and they are eager to break this streak, especially as this may be Ronaldo's final World Cup appearance.
