Vancouver, July 3: Switzerland showcased a stellar performance, defeating Algeria 2-0 to secure a spot in the Round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup 2026, held at BC Place on Friday.
Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye were the goal scorers for Switzerland. Although Algeria had some promising moments in the first half, Ndoye's goal early in the second half seemed to deflate their spirits, and they struggled to mount a comeback.
This victory marks Switzerland's third consecutive win in World Cup matches, a first for the team, following earlier group-stage victories against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Canada.
Switzerland opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Johan Manzambi made a determined run into the penalty area, setting up Embolo for a close-range finish.
Just seconds into the second half, Algeria found themselves further behind. A poorly cleared cross from Denis Zakaria fell to Ndoye, who expertly placed his shot into the net, celebrating his first World Cup goal.
Ndoye's goal echoed a similar moment from their previous match against Canada, where Switzerland also scored immediately after halftime, but this time they had a two-goal cushion.
With only one defeat in their last 17 matches, Switzerland proved too strong for Algeria, who failed to create significant scoring opportunities and were kept at bay by a solid Swiss defense. This victory sends Switzerland into the Round of 16 for the fourth consecutive World Cup.
Switzerland will remain in Vancouver for their next match against either Colombia or Ghana on July 7, aiming for another win on Canadian soil.
