Son Heungmin Eyes Last World Cup with South Korea
Son Heungmin's World Cup Aspirations
Son Heungmin, the South Korean football star and former Tottenham Hotspur player, has expressed that the upcoming FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico, might be his final appearance in the tournament. He hopes to lead his team to replicate the remarkable semifinal run of the 2002 World Cup. When Son debuted in the World Cup in 2014, six members of the current squad were still in school. From the 2014 team that did not advance beyond the group stage, only goalkeeper Kim Seunggyu and Son remain.
If South Korea reaches the quarterfinals, Son will celebrate his 34th birthday in July while still competing in the tournament. After his debut in 2014, Son became a legend at Tottenham, where he played from 2015 to 2025, becoming one of their top goal-scorers. Last August, he transitioned to Los Angeles Football Club in Major League Soccer (MLS), a move partly aimed at preparing for the World Cup and fostering football enthusiasm within the Korean community in the USA.
Reflecting on his journey, Son recalled watching the 1998 World Cup, but it was the 2002 edition in Japan and South Korea that left a lasting impression on him. He stated, "I always dreamed of becoming a football player and participating in such a grand event. Now, as I prepare for my fourth World Cup, I feel honored to have this opportunity again." He acknowledged that his move to Los Angeles FC was primarily motivated by World Cup preparations and the desire to uplift the Korean community there.
South Korea is placed in Group A with Mexico, South Africa, and the Czech Republic, starting their campaign against the Czech Republic on June 11 in Zapopan, with all group matches taking place in Mexico. If they advance to the knockout stage, they could play in Los Angeles.
"I am incredibly excited and hope for another memorable World Cup. Playing in LA would be a dream come true. My transfer was also about bringing joy to the Korean community, who make me proud to represent Korea. I strive to give back everything I can, which is why I always play with a smile," Son shared.
He also reflected on the incredible achievement of their coach Hong Myungbo in 2002, leading the team to the semifinals. "I aspire to have a similar journey with my teammates. My ultimate dream is to recreate that magical experience in the USA," he added.
For South Korea to progress in the tournament, Son emphasized the importance of unity among the players. "The support from the Korean people gives us immense strength. To achieve great things, we must be united in heart and mind. This could be my last World Cup, and I hope for a remarkable journey," he stated.
Son, a prominent figure in South Korean football, views his role as a source of joy rather than a burden. "I believe I can bring happiness to people, and I remain humble and dedicated. While there is a sense of responsibility, it doesn't feel like a burden; I feel fortunate," he concluded.
