GUWAHATI, Aug 9: Redeem Tlang has made history by becoming the first player to achieve 100 appearances for NorthEast United FC during the ongoing Durand Cup in Guwahati.
The seasoned winger reached this milestone after over ten years with the Highlanders, having initially joined the club in the inaugural season of the Indian Super League in 2014. He also played for FC Goa and Odisha FC before making his return to NorthEast United.
"It all started with my first match in 2014. I am thrilled to reach this point. There’s still a long journey ahead, and we must continue to work hard together. I appreciate all the fans for their unwavering support," Redeem expressed.
"Being the first to play 100 matches for the club is a significant achievement. I hope this inspires many others to reach new heights," he added.
Redeem was honored by head coach Juan Pedro Benali prior to NorthEast United's Group F match against Karbi Anglong Morning Star FC in the Durand Cup on Saturday.
The Highlanders have kicked off their campaign impressively, securing victories against Bodoland FC (6-0) and Karbi Anglong Morning Star FC (4-1). Redeem also scored in the opening match against Bodoland FC on August 1.
Reflecting on the team's strong performance, Redeem noted that the squad's continuity has been crucial.
"We are functioning well as a unit. Many players have been together for the last couple of years, and with some new additions, we are building good chemistry," said Redeem, who is a product of Shillong Lajong FC.
"We aim to improve as we progress. The Durand Cup holds great significance for us."
NorthEast United is on the hunt for their third consecutive Durand Cup title, having won the tournament in the last two seasons.
After playing in a more defensive role last season, Redeem has returned to a forward position this year. He stated he is prepared to contribute in any capacity the coaching staff requires.
"As a player, I must be ready for any role. I am committed to giving my best for the team whenever I step onto the pitch," he concluded.
