Italy's football federation has approached Pep Guardiola for the head coach position after discussions with Paolo Maldini and Leonardo in Barcelona. Reports from a prominent sports network indicate that Guardiola has yet to confirm his interest in the role. The meeting, which was initially thought to be brief, reportedly extended over the weekend, indicating Italy's serious intent to secure Guardiola's services.

Images of Maldini, the newly appointed technical director of the Italian football federation (FIGC), alongside his advisor Leonardo in Barcelona have circulated on social media, with claims that they presented a coaching project to Guardiola. The Italian team is keen on the 55-year-old, who has previously managed Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City, as they seek a new head coach following their failure to qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Guardiola's Focus on Family

Despite being Italy's top choice, Guardiola has expressed that he is not ready to return to coaching just yet. He stated, "From a mental standpoint, I don't miss anything at all. I started managing at 37, and my entire life has been bound to football. Now, I want to try and discover life, to be happy doing other things that have nothing to do with football." He emphasized his desire to spend more time with his family, particularly with his 95-year-old father.

While Guardiola remains a prime candidate, the Italian federation is also considering other options. Former Italy coach Roberto Mancini and Juventus icon Andrea Pirlo have been mentioned, but recent reports suggest that Antonio Conte may have already agreed to take over as Italy's next head coach.
