Foxborough, June 30: Paraguay's national team, along with their coach, attributed their remarkable victory over four-time champions Germany to their unwavering belief, thorough preparation, and sheer determination. They triumphed in a penalty shootout, winning 4-3 after a 1-1 draw, marking one of the tournament's most significant upsets and ending Germany's unbeaten streak in World Cup penalty shootouts.

Following Paraguay's inaugural win in a World Cup knockout stage, head coach Gustavo Alfaro praised his players, stating, "I had 26 warriors before the match, and they became legends after it." He acknowledged the uncertainty of their future in the tournament but emphasized the epic nature of this match.

Alfaro highlighted the resilience of his team, contrasting their humble beginnings with the elite backgrounds of Germany's players. "Our opponents are nurtured in the finest academies across Europe. We hail from the red earth," he remarked. "We learned to play football barefoot, with parents making sacrifices for their children's dreams. That's our story."

Goalkeeper Orlando Gill, who saved two penalties during the shootout and earned the Player of the Match title, credited his success to extensive preparation. "I studied every player, every detail. My ability to save two penalties was crucial for our advancement," the 26-year-old shared.

Gill acknowledged the constant pressure from Germany throughout the match, describing it as a "horror movie" with the Germans seemingly everywhere.

Julio Enciso, who scored for Paraguay, stated that the team's respect for Germany did not translate into fear. "We acknowledged their talent, but we weren't intimidated by anyone," he asserted.

Paraguay is set to face the winner of the round-of-32 clash between France and Sweden for a chance to reach the quarterfinals. Looking ahead, Enciso affirmed that the team would stick to its playing style. "They have world-class players, but we also possess our strengths, and we will aim to challenge whoever we encounter," he concluded.
