Pakistan Withdraws from SAFF Women's Championship 2026 Amid Political Tensions
Political Strains Impacting Sports Relations
The relationship between India and Pakistan in the realm of sports has been fraught with tension for many years. This situation has worsened following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, leading to Pakistan's decision not to travel to India for the Asia Cup 2026. Consequently, the tournament was relocated to a neutral venue in the UAE. Furthermore, an agreement has been reached with the ICC, stipulating that matches between the two nations will occur at neutral sites until 2028. The ongoing political discord has now impacted another significant event, the SAFF Women's Championship 2026.
Pakistan has opted out of the upcoming SAFF Women’s Championship, which is scheduled to take place in Fatorda, Goa, from May 25 to June 7, as they did not confirm their participation. This decision is likely influenced by the current diplomatic tensions between the two countries. The South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) had anticipated all seven member nations would take part, but Pakistan missed the final entry deadline, reportedly due to political obstacles. A senior official stated, "Pakistan will not participate. The deadline has passed without confirmation. It appears the [Pakistan] government does not want the team to travel to India," as reported by a local media outlet.

With Pakistan's withdrawal confirmed, the tournament will now feature six participating nations:
- India (Hosts)
- Bangladesh
- Nepal
- Bhutan
- Sri Lanka
- Maldives
The tournament schedule will remain unchanged despite Pakistan's absence. Notably, the Pakistan men's football team had previously visited India for the 2023 SAFF Championship. The trend of Pakistan withdrawing from tournaments held in India has been evident in recent years, primarily due to strained political relations. For instance, their matches in the T20 World Cup 2026 and the ODI Women's World Cup 2025 were arranged in Sri Lanka. Additionally, although the Pakistan hockey team participated in Chennai in 2023, they withdrew from the 2025 Men’s Asia Cup citing security concerns.
