Argentina vs. Spain: A Historic World Cup Final

As the reigning champions, Argentina gears up to face Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final, Lionel Messi acknowledged that the Euro 2024 champions are among the most familiar rivals he has encountered. Following Spain's victory over France and Argentina's thrilling comeback against England in the semifinals, this matchup marks a historic event as the Copa America champions take on the European champions for the first time in World Cup history.

In the semifinal, after England initially led 1-0 thanks to Anthony Gordon's goal, Messi's brilliance turned the tide in favor of Argentina. His creativity and movement were pivotal in the second half, assisting both Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez, who scored to secure Argentina's place in the final. This match will also be Messi's first World Cup encounter with Spain, a nation where he achieved legendary status with Barcelona.

After the semifinal, Messi expressed the significance of this match due to his deep ties with Spanish football and Barcelona. He stated, "Spain is a great team with outstanding players and a very distinctive style of play. They’re a team I know very well, with a football philosophy they’ve been following for many years. I know their players too." Spain, the 2010 World Cup winners, reached the final after a 2-0 win over France, having conceded only one goal throughout the tournament, marking their first World Cup final appearance in 16 years.

Messi reflected on Argentina's remarkable journey over the past four years, noting that this final will be their fifth since losing to Brazil in the Copa America in 2019. He remarked, "It’s crazy what this group has been doing: five finals. We’re coming off winning the World Cup, we’ve been the best team over the last four years, and today we’re among the two best teams in the world, another final. No matter how much it hurts or what people say, this group keeps proving that nobody gives you anything on the pitch."

As the title match approaches at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, Messi is a frontrunner for the Golden Ball, having scored eight goals and provided four assists in the tournament. He shared that his preparations for this World Cup began nearly a year ago, stating, "I’ve been preparing for this World Cup for almost a year. I spent December in Argentina, training morning and afternoon, because I knew I was going to give everything to arrive in the best possible shape."
