The nature of knockout football can be harsh, often disregarding emotions and legacies, leaving dreams shattered. This was the reality for Luka Modric at Toronto Stadium on Friday (IST).

The anticipation surrounding the World Cup round of 32 match between Portugal and Croatia revolved around two legendary figures – Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modric, wearing the iconic numbers 7 and 10. These former Real Madrid teammates, who have been rivals for years, represented the hopes of their nations. One would advance, while the other would see their World Cup aspirations come to an end.

As the final whistle blew, confirming Portugal's thrilling 2-1 win, the expected outcome unfolded.

Croatia took the lead in the 53rd minute with a goal from Ivan Perisic, putting Portugal on the back foot. However, Ronaldo, even at the age of 41, showcased his prowess on the grand stage. After Renato Veiga was fouled, Ronaldo converted a penalty in the 68th minute, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to equalize.

This goal was particularly noteworthy as Ronaldo became the oldest player to score in a World Cup knockout match, marking his first goal in the knockout stages despite participating in six World Cups. This also brought his total World Cup goals to 11.
