New Delhi, Oct 29: Liverpool secured a spot in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals after defeating Chelsea 6-5 in a penalty shootout at Anfield, marking a disappointing return for Xabi Alonso.
The match was closely contested, with both teams scoring from the penalty spot during regular time. Morgan Rogers opened the scoring, but Cody Gakpo equalized for Liverpool just before halftime, resulting in a 1-1 draw at the end of regulation.
Ultimately, Liverpool triumphed in front of their home crowd, with Joe Gomez converting his penalty, while Wesley Fofana missed his attempt, sealing the victory for the Reds.
This win continues Liverpool's dominance in recent Carabao Cup encounters against Chelsea, as they prepare to face AFC Bournemouth in the quarter-finals.
Bournemouth and Crystal Palace Also Advance
In another match, Bournemouth cruised into the quarter-finals with a convincing 3-0 win over Aston Villa at Vitality Stadium. Amine Adli opened the scoring early, and despite dominating the first half, Bournemouth did not extend their lead until Lewis Cook scored six minutes into the second half, marking his first goal in over two years.
Alvaro Rodriguez added a third goal in the 69th minute, ensuring Bournemouth's place in the last eight for the fourth time in their history, having previously defeated AC Milan and Manchester United.
Meanwhile, Crystal Palace continued their impressive form with a 1-0 victory over Fulham, thanks to Eddie Nketiah's first-half goal. This win marks their fifth consecutive victory at Craven Cottage and secures their place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals for the third consecutive season, a first for the club.
Palace will face Sunderland at Selhurst Park, while Sunderland themselves bounced back from a poor league start with a 3-2 win over Brentford, scoring three first-half goals to take control of the match.
