Miami, May 26: Inter Miami CF has shared an update regarding Lionel Messi following an injury scare just weeks ahead of the FIFA World Cup.
During a recent MLS match against Philadelphia Union, Messi exited the game due to discomfort after executing a free kick. The situation raised alarms as he did not stay on the bench post-substitution but instead went directly to the locker room with medical staff.
Inter Miami's head coach, Guillermo Hoyos, mentioned that Messi felt fatigued after playing on a challenging pitch.
On Tuesday, the MLS provided an update indicating that the preliminary diagnosis points to an overload linked to "muscle fatigue in his left hamstring."
"Following additional medical evaluations on Monday, the initial assessment suggests an overload related to muscle fatigue in his left hamstring. His return to physical activities will depend on his clinical and functional recovery," stated Inter Miami.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to take place in the United States, Mexico, and Canada from June 11 to July 19. Argentina will enter the tournament as the defending champions, competing in Group J against Algeria, Austria (June 22), and Jordan (June 27).
Although Messi has not officially confirmed his participation in his sixth World Cup, he is anticipated to lead Lionel Scaloni's squad this summer, alongside his Inter Miami teammate Rodrigo De Paul.
Messi guided La Albiceleste to victory in the 2022 World Cup and is nearing 200 caps for his national team. He holds the record for the most World Cup appearances at 26, contributing 13 goals and 8 assists.
Argentina boasts three World Cup titles, and Messi has an impressive tally of 116 goals in 198 appearances. He played a pivotal role in securing the trophy at Qatar 2022, culminating in a dramatic penalty shootout win over France.
In the expanded 48-team format of the 2026 World Cup, the top two teams from each group will progress to the knockout stages, along with the top eight third-place teams.
