New Delhi, July 16: Lionel Messi has addressed the accusations of favoritism by FIFA towards Argentina, emphasizing that their advancement to a second consecutive World Cup final is a testament to their status as one of the world's elite teams, asserting that their achievements are not mere luck.

In a thrilling match in Atlanta, Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez scored late goals, both assisted by Messi, following Anthony Gordon's goal in the 55th minute, bringing Argentina closer to defending their title.

Argentina's title defense has been marred by controversies, with several contentious referee decisions appearing to favor them. However, Messi firmly rejected the notion that the tournament has been biased.

"It pains those who are hurt... We have been the best for the last four years, regardless of public opinion. Once again, we are among the top two teams globally, which proves that our accomplishments are not coincidental and we earned everything. Achieving back-to-back World Cup finals is a rare feat, and this team has done it," Messi stated in an interview with TyC Sports, clearly addressing his detractors.

He further remarked, "Had we lost to England, critics would have made baseless claims, but we didn’t allow that to happen. We knew we were superior in terms of football, but high-stakes matches like this can lead to historic moments."

Messi also paid tribute to the legendary Diego Maradona, who famously played in the World Cup quarter-final against England 40 years ago.

"Without a doubt, Diego is celebrating this from above because today was incredibly special for him. I hope he enjoys this moment as it is a gift for him too," he concluded.
