Miami, Sep 17: Lionel Messi has once again made headlines by scoring his 100th goal for Inter Miami, leading the team to a 2-0 triumph over LIGA MX's Cruz Azul and securing the Campeones Cup for the fifth time.

Messi initiated the scoring in the 24th minute, with Casemiro later confirming the win with a header in the second half, as Inter Miami celebrated their victory at Nu Stadium on Thursday.

This milestone makes Messi the first player in Inter Miami's history to reach 100 goals, achieved in just 115 matches across all competitions.

His goals have been accumulated over four seasons: 11 in 2023, 23 in 2024, 43 in 2025, and 23 so far in 2026.

Since joining the club in the summer of 2023, Messi has been instrumental in leading Inter Miami to its first four trophies, including the 2023 League Cup, the 2024 MLS Supporters’ Shield, the 2025 Eastern Conference title, and the 2025 MLS Cup.

The opening goal came from a precise cross by Luis Suarez, allowing Messi to head the ball into the net from close range.

Cruz Azul had an early chance in the sixth minute, but Inter Miami's goalkeeper, Dayne St. Clair, made a crucial save against Jose Paradela.

Despite some threats from the Mexican side, Inter Miami maintained their lead throughout the first half and most of the second.

Messi contributed to the second goal by taking a corner in the 81st minute, which Casemiro headed in to extend the lead.

This marked Casemiro's fourth goal since joining Inter Miami, while Messi recorded his 15th assist in all competitions for 2026.

St. Clair was impressive, making six saves overall and another vital stop during stoppage time to keep a clean sheet.

This victory also marked a successful debut for new head coach Cristian Gonzalez, who led Inter Miami in his first championship match.
