Kylian Mbappe Shatters World Cup Records in France's Victory Over Iraq

Kylian Mbappe made history during France's 3-0 victory over Iraq, scoring two goals and achieving his 100th international cap. He became the fastest player to reach 15 World Cup goals, surpassing legends like Ronaldo and Messi. This article delves into his remarkable performance and the implications for his career as he continues to break records on the world stage.

Historic Night for Mbappe at Philadelphia Stadium

Kylian Mbappe made a remarkable impact at Philadelphia Stadium, marking his 100th international appearance for France in just 14 minutes. The Real Madrid forward showcased his incredible speed and skill, scoring a powerful left-footed goal from 20 yards, beating Iraqi goalkeeper Ahmed Basil at the near post. This performance contributed to Les Bleus' commanding 3-0 win over Iraq in their Group I match on Tuesday. At 27, Mbappe has now become the fastest player in FIFA World Cup history to net 15 goals, achieving this feat in only 16 matches across three tournaments (2018, 2022, and 2026). This milestone cements his status as the most prolific tournament striker ever, breaking the previous record for the quickest 15 goals.

Mbappe Surpasses Legends Messi and Ronaldo

With his first goal against Iraq, Mbappe equaled the record held by Brazilian great Ronaldo, who reached his 15th goal in 18 matches. In contrast, Messi ranks fourth on this list, having achieved the milestone in 27 games, while Germany's Miroslav Klose did it in 23. Following his initial strike, Mbappe scored again in the 54th minute, moving into a tie for the second-most goals in World Cup history, closing in on Lionel Messi's record. He is now just two goals shy of Messi's all-time tally, which was set during a brace against Austria prior to the match against Iraq.

France's Dominant Performance

Mbappe's first goal came from a left-footed shot that slipped past the Iraqi goalkeeper. His second was set up after a poor pass from Iraqi defender Zaid Tahseen to Basil, which Ousmane Dembele intercepted and assisted to Mbappe for an easy tap-in. Dembele later added a third goal in the 66th minute, sealing the match at 3-0. Although Mbappe had a chance to complete a hat trick during a late breakaway, he was substituted just before the 90-minute mark. In total, he has scored four goals in this year's World Cup, eight in 2022, where he was the top scorer and won the Golden Boot, and four in 2018.
