Seattle, June 27: Iran is left in suspense as they await the outcome of their FIFA World Cup journey following a tense 1-1 draw against Egypt. The match saw a last-minute goal from Iran disallowed due to an offside call after a VAR review.

Egypt, having already secured their spot in the next round, finished second in Group G with five points, trailing Belgium on goal difference. They are set to face Australia in the Round of 32 in Dallas on July 3.

Iran concluded the group stage in third place with three points and now hopes to qualify as one of the eight best third-placed teams. The match began with excitement as Egypt took an early lead within five minutes, initiated by Mohamed Salah, with Mahmoud Saber’s shot slipping past Iran's goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand.

Iran quickly responded, earning a penalty when Mehdi Taremi was fouled, but goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir saved the attempt. However, Ramin Rezaeian capitalized on the rebound, scoring from a tight angle in the 14th minute.

After the first-half water break, Egypt, already qualified, adopted a more defensive approach, allowing Iran to gain control in a match that saw few clear chances following the initial excitement. The tension escalated in the dying moments when Taremi's header struck the crossbar, leading to Shoja Khalilzadeh scoring in the third minute of stoppage time. The Iranian bench erupted in celebration, believing they had clinched a memorable win.

Yet, VAR intervened, declaring Khalilzadeh offside, dashing Iran's hopes and leaving their World Cup destiny uncertain.
