Los Angeles, June 16: In a gripping encounter at the Los Angeles Stadium, Iran held New Zealand to a 2-2 draw in their opening match of Group G, denying the All Whites their first FIFA World Cup victory.

Ramin Rezaeian played a pivotal role for Team Melli, scoring their first goal and assisting the second. New Zealand's Elijah Just netted both of their goals, with Chris Wood providing assists for each.

The match began with Mehdi Taremi testing New Zealand's goalkeeper Max Crocombe early on. However, it was Just who struck first, scoring a powerful low shot to give New Zealand the lead. Wood's involvement was crucial as he assisted Just and nearly set up another goal shortly after, with Sarpreet Singh's shot forcing a save from Iran's Alireza Beiranvand.

Iran responded with Taremi hitting the post just before the first water break. Following the break, they came back revitalized, with Rezaeian breaking through to equalize with a composed finish, making it 1-1.

New Zealand regained the lead shortly after halftime when Wood set up Just again, who skillfully lobbed the ball over Beiranvand.

Yet, Iran quickly leveled the score once more. Rezaeian turned from scorer to provider, delivering a perfect cross to Mohammad Mohebbi, who headed it in off the post. The match remained intense, but neither side could secure a late winner, with Wood's header in stoppage time going straight to the goalkeeper.

New Zealand will look to secure their first World Cup win against Egypt on June 22, while Iran prepares to face Belgium.

This match marked the fourth consecutive draw of a day that started with Cabo Verde holding Spain to a stalemate.
