Hugo Ekitike's Injury Raises Concerns for France Ahead of World Cup

France is facing a significant injury concern just before the FIFA World Cup 2026, as forward Hugo Ekitike collapsed during the UEFA Champions League quarterfinal clash between Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield on Tuesday night. The 23-year-old, who plays for Liverpool, was seen in distress and had to be stretchered off the field. The incident occurred around the 30-minute mark when he clutched his lower right leg, prompting a halt in play as medical personnel rushed to assist him. Ekitike was ultimately replaced by Mohamed Salah, an Egyptian international, as Liverpool struggled to regain their footing in a match they lost 2-0, leading to their exit from the tournament.

Liverpool's manager, Arne Slot, expressed concern over the injury but refrained from providing a specific diagnosis. He stated, “The injury looks really bad, but difficult for me to say how bad,” highlighting the uncertainty surrounding Ekitike's condition. Since joining Liverpool from Eintracht Frankfurt last July for €91 million on a six-year contract, Ekitike has been instrumental for the team, netting 17 goals across various competitions. His impressive performance also secured him a spot on the French national team, where he made an immediate impact by scoring his first international goal in a 4-0 victory over Ukraine at Parc des Princes, followed by another goal in a friendly against Brazil on March 26.

As Didier Deschamps awaits the results of medical scans, all eyes are now on France's captain, Kylian Mbappe, who is expected to lead Real Madrid in their crucial quarter-final second leg against Bayern Munich. Bayern currently holds a 2-1 lead going into the return match at the Allianz Arena, despite Mbappe's late goal in the first leg at Santiago Bernabeu, which kept Madrid's hopes alive. Real Madrid's coach, Alvaro Arbeloa, dismissed the notion that his team would need to perform miracles, asserting, “To begin with, we are Real Madrid. If there's a team that can come to the Allianz Arena to turn things around, it's us.”
