Confident Preparations for the AFC U-17 Asian Cup

GUWAHATI, April 22: The Indian Under-17 boys are set to participate in the AFC U-17 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia next month, entering the tournament with a sense of optimism fueled by a series of competitive friendly matches and a clear objective: to qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup.

The Blue Colts have demonstrated their potential recently, achieving a 2-1 victory over the UAE, drawing 2-2 with Thailand, and securing a solid 3-0 win against Indonesia. Although they faced a narrow 1-2 defeat against South Korea, a higher-ranked opponent, it highlighted their increasing competitiveness. However, they suffered a setback with a 5-1 loss to the UAE in Samut Prakan on Tuesday.

Assistant coach Subam Rabha expressed that the exposure from these matches has enhanced both the confidence and cohesion within the team.

“We have faith in our players. They have participated in quality friendlies. Our close loss to South Korea and victory over UAE, both of whom are ranked higher, have uplifted the team's spirits,” Rabha shared over the phone from Thailand.

India will kick off their Group D matches against Australia on May 6, followed by games against Uzbekistan on May 10 and DPR Korea on May 13 in Jeddah. The top two teams from each group will progress to the quarterfinals.

For India, reaching the knockout stage is crucial, as all eight quarterfinalists will automatically qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar later this year.

The path is clear: finishing in the top two of Group D will guarantee India a spot in the World Cup. A lower finish would complicate their chances, relying on results from other groups, a situation the team aims to avoid.

“Yes, that’s our goal, and it’s achievable. I believe the boys can accomplish this,” Subam added.

Extensive Preparations for the Tournament

India's preparation has been thorough and strategic. The team has traveled to various countries, testing their skills against different playing styles and conditions.

With tours to China, Turkiye, Myanmar, and Thailand, along with home matches against Tajikistan in Goa, they have played over 10 international friendlies leading up to the continental tournament. The Indian U-17 men's team is scheduled to play two friendly matches against Qatar on April 25 and 28 in Doha.

In one of their recent victories, Azlaan Shah netted the winning goal against UAE in the 27th minute, completing a move initiated by Dallalmuon Gangte.

Local Talent and Coaching Excellence

The campaign also has a notable connection to Assam. Subam, who is from Guwahati, is part of the coaching staff, and the squad includes goalkeeper Manashjyoti Baruah and forward Rahan Ahmed.

As an AFC A licensed coach, Subam has previously been associated with Indian Super League teams like NorthEast United FC and Odisha FC.

He praised head coach Bibiano Fernandes for creating a competitive and disciplined team environment.

“Bibiano is a fantastic mentor. I learn something new from him every day. He is a true professional who ensures everything is executed properly,” Subam remarked.

“Collaborating with him is a valuable learning experience, which greatly benefits the players as well.”

Aiming for Historic Qualification

India secured their place in the tournament by finishing at the top of their qualifying group, which included a significant 2-1 victory over Iran in November 2025. This will be India's 10th appearance at the AFC U-17 Asian Cup.

However, the story goes beyond mere participation.

India's only previous appearance at the FIFA U-17 World Cup was as hosts in 2017. A successful campaign in Saudi Arabia would mark their first qualification based on merit.

With a well-prepared squad, exposure to international play, and a clear path ahead, the Blue Colts are now on the brink of achieving this historic milestone.
