Mexico City, June 29: Hong Myung-bo has announced his resignation as the head coach of South Korea's national football team, following the team's inability to progress beyond the group stage in the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The South Korean squad began their World Cup journey with a 2-1 win against Czechia but faced two consecutive 1-0 losses to Mexico and South Africa, sealing their fate as the group stage concluded on June 28 (IST).
Having taken charge in 2024, Hong accepted full responsibility for the team's disappointing performance, especially after a successful qualifying campaign.
"I sincerely apologize to all the Korean fans who support our national team. Today, I announce my resignation as head coach," Hong stated during a press conference.
"Accepting this role was challenging, but I committed myself to it fully. I believed that taking responsibility was the only way to approach this position," he added.
At 57, Hong recorded 15 victories, five draws, and six losses during his second tenure as coach, having previously managed the team in 2013 and 2014. His playing career included 136 caps for South Korea.
"As head coach, no justification can outweigh the final outcome. I failed to deliver the results our supporters anticipated. I take full responsibility for this. I am grateful to my coaching staff who shared a common goal with me," he remarked.
"While I resign as head coach, my passion for Korean football remains unchanged. I will continue to support the national team in regaining the trust and affection of our fans," he concluded.
