GUWAHATI, May 22: The life of a footballer is filled with ups and downs, and Halicharan Narzary has seen it all.
The talented player from Assam was part of Bengaluru FC, one of India's premier football clubs, where he shared the field with some of the sport's biggest stars. However, he often found himself sidelined.
Seeking More Opportunities
“I was in dire need of playing time, which I wasn't receiving at Bengaluru FC. Hence, I opted to join Diamond Harbour FC on loan to participate in the Indian Football League (IFL),” Halicharan explained.
Transitioning from the Indian Super League (ISL) to a lower-tier competition was a significant decision. Yet, months later, this choice has proven to be one of the most fulfilling in his career.
On May 17, Diamond Harbour secured the IFL 2025-26 title after a 1-1 draw against Dempo SC in Goa, earning promotion to the ISL for the 2026-27 season. Halicharan played a pivotal role in this success, netting three goals and providing two assists throughout the season.
“This victory means a lot to me. I’m thrilled and relieved that I made the right choice,” said the winger from Kokrajhar.
At 32, Halicharan is recognized as one of Assam's most successful footballers. Since his debut in 2015, he has represented the Indian senior team 28 times and has also been part of the U-19 and U-23 squads.
“This season was crucial, and winning this title is significant as it marks my first I-League trophy,” he added.
Throughout his career, Halicharan has played for several ISL teams, including NorthEast United FC, Chennaiyin FC, Kerala Blasters FC, FC Goa, and Bengaluru FC. He was also part of the Hyderabad FC squad that clinched the ISL title in the 2021-22 season.
Taking a Leap of Faith
With limited chances at Bengaluru FC, frustration began to mount.
“I just wanted to play more and was in search of opportunities. It was a difficult decision. After discussing it with my wife, I chose to join Diamond Harbour,” he recounted.
Reflecting on his choice, he feels both relief and fulfillment.
“It was immensely satisfying, especially after nearly a year at Bengaluru FC with little playing time. Leaving the top-tier league for the I-League was a tough call,” he stated.
“Scoring goals for my team has been fantastic. It was an emotional experience for me and a way to channel my frustration from not playing for so long. I had to put in a lot of effort.”
Halicharan also commended Diamond Harbour's head coach Kibu Vicuna for his exceptional management skills and understanding of players.
“I’ve worked with many coaches, but I really appreciated Kibu's approach. After joining the club, we had a conversation, and I liked his philosophy. He genuinely tries to understand a player's perspective. He’s a great person,” he remarked.
Founded just six years ago, Diamond Harbour has rapidly ascended in Indian football, winning I-League 3, I-League 2, and now the Indian Football League, which has led to their promotion to the ISL.
Diamond Harbour is set to play their final league match against Shillong Lajong FC on May 23.
Currently, Halicharan is a free agent, but there is a strong likelihood that Diamond Harbour will retain him for the upcoming ISL season.
“First, I want to savor these moments with my family and teammates, and then we will decide on the next steps. I’m eager to return to the ISL,” he concluded.
