Mexico's Historic World Cup Squad Announcement

Mexico has officially revealed its roster for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, featuring a remarkable inclusion of 40-year-old goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa. This decision will allow Ochoa to set a new record at the prestigious tournament, joining the ranks of football legends Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. As one of three goalkeepers selected for the 26-member squad, Ochoa will represent Mexico, which is co-hosting the event alongside the United States and Canada. He has been a consistent presence in the Mexican national team, participating in the last five World Cups: 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022. Ochoa gained international acclaim for his outstanding performance against Brazil in a memorable 0-0 draw and concluded the 2018 tournament as the goalkeeper with the most saves. His 2022 campaign was highlighted by a crucial penalty save against Robert Lewandowski.

With this selection, Ochoa will become only the third player in history, alongside Messi and Ronaldo, to represent their national teams in six different World Cup tournaments. Both Messi and Ronaldo have participated in the 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022 editions. However, it's important to note that while the Argentine and Portuguese stars played at least a minute in each tournament, Ochoa was on the bench during the 2006 and 2010 events before making his World Cup debut in 2014. If he steps onto the field this time, it will be his fourth World Cup appearance. Luka Modric, who also played in the 2006 World Cup, will be participating in his fifth World Cup in 2026, as Croatia missed the 2010 qualification.

This selection also marks Ochoa as the first goalkeeper to be included in a national squad for six different World Cups, surpassing the previous record held by Gianluigi Buffon, Manuel Neuer, and Antonio Carabajal. However, those players have all participated in matches across more editions. Neuer is set to play in his fifth World Cup in 2026 after returning to international duty, having been Germany's first-choice goalkeeper in the last four tournaments and is expected to start once again.
