Berlin, Aug 31: Yuito Suzuki showcased an outstanding performance by scoring a hat-trick as Freiburg kicked off their Bundesliga 2026/27 season with a commanding 4-1 victory against Werder Bremen at home. The visitors started the match with a solid defense, limiting Freiburg's offensive opportunities, with Marco Grull and Amos Pieper attempting early shots.

As the match progressed, Freiburg began to assert their dominance, breaking the deadlock in the 29th minute. Niklas Beste delivered a corner that found Suzuki, who skillfully evaded his defender to head the ball into the net from close range.

Just before halftime, Freiburg doubled their lead when Matthias Ginter assisted Matanovic, who skillfully turned and placed a shot into the left corner.

Freiburg wasted no time in the second half, extending their lead just three minutes after the restart. Derry Scherhant reached the byline and set up Suzuki, who finished from five meters out.

Suzuki completed his hat-trick in the 55th minute after Bremen lost possession during their build-up, with Matanovic providing the assist for Freiburg's fourth goal.

Despite Bremen's attempts to respond, including a denied effort from Niclas Fullkrug by goalkeeper Mio Backhaus, substitute Dariusz Stalmach managed to score in the 76th minute, heading in Grull's corner on his Bundesliga debut.

Freiburg maintained control of the game, even as they eased off the pressure towards the end. Maximilian Eggestein came close to scoring, hitting the post with a long-range shot eight minutes before the final whistle, according to reports.

Looking ahead, Freiburg will face Paderborn next, while Bremen will host RB Leipzig.

In another match, Augsburg spoiled Schalke's return to the Bundesliga with a 3-0 victory at home. Former Schalke player Michael Gregoritsch opened the scoring in the 18th minute, and Schalke was reduced to ten men when Ron Schallenberg received a red card for fouling Gregoritsch in the 62nd minute. Anton Kade added a second goal 17 minutes later, and substitute Rodrigo Ribeiro sealed the win in stoppage time.
