Franco Baresi: A Football Legend Remembered

Milan, July 31: Franco Baresi, the former captain of Italy and a legendary figure at AC Milan, has passed away at the age of 66 after a prolonged illness, as confirmed by the Serie A club on Friday.

Recognized as one of the finest defenders in football history, Baresi was a seven-time nominee for the Ballon d'Or, finishing second in 1989 to Marco van Basten. He is also honored as the 33rd best footballer of the 20th century by the IFFHS and was inducted into the Italian Football Hall of Fame in 2013.

Throughout his career, Baresi earned 81 caps for the Italian national team. He was part of the squad that clinched the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain, although he did not play in the matches. Twelve years later, he led Italy to the final of the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the USA, delivering a remarkable performance against Brazil despite recovering from a knee injury.

Baresi participated in three World Cups (1982, 1990, and 1994) and two European Championships (1980 and 1988), making 81 appearances and scoring once.

Giovanni Malago, President of the Italian Football Federation, expressed his condolences, stating, "Italian football has lost one of its legends. An extraordinary champion who wore only two jerseys throughout his career: AC Milan and the Azzurri. A romantic choice, one that earned him a place in the hearts of fans and millions of Italians. We will remember him as he deserves during the national team's upcoming matches, the team for which he always demonstrated exceptional dedication, becoming one of its most glorious symbols."

Baresi was a stalwart for AC Milan, where he played for two decades, winning six Scudetti, three European Cups, two Intercontinental Cups, two UEFA Super Cups, and four Italian Super Cups.

In an official statement, AC Milan remarked, "Announcing the loss of someone who embodied the heart and soul of AC Milan is incredibly difficult. But everyone at the Club and all the Milanisti must live up to the memory of Franco Baresi. We must be strong and gather every bit of energy, even at this saddest of times. We lost Franco only a few months after his last public appearance in a packed San Siro, at the Milan Winter Olympics opening ceremony, an event on the world stage he helped make unforgettable."

"In memory of Franco, we stand united, knowing he'll guide and push us throughout our Rossoneri journey. Forever. Because Baresi is forever," the club added.

After retiring in 1997, AC Milan honored him by permanently retiring his iconic No. 6 shirt, recognizing his immense contributions to the club. Since October 2020, Baresi had been serving as the club's honorary vice-president, remaining actively involved with Milan and continuing to inspire both players and fans.
