Madrid, May 30: FC Barcelona has officially announced the acquisition of English winger Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United, marking him as the third English player to don the Barcelona jersey, following in the footsteps of Gary Lineker and Marcus Rashford.
The 25-year-old has signed a six-year deal worth approximately 70 million euros (around 81.3 million US dollars), with an additional 10 million euros contingent on performance incentives, after successfully completing his medical in Barcelona on Thursday.
The announcement was delayed by seven hours due to complications with the legal documentation.
During his presentation at Spotify Nou Camp, Gordon expressed his long-standing desire to play for Barcelona, stating, "I have dreamed of playing for Barca since I was three years old." He chose to speak in Spanish, reflecting his commitment to the club and his childhood aspirations.
He shared, "I had a physiotherapist in Newcastle, and we talked daily. I told him, 'One day, I will play for Barca, so I want to learn Spanish.'" Gordon revealed that he was only recently made aware of Barcelona's interest, but once he learned they were serious, he had no doubts about joining.
"Barcelona is the biggest club in the world. It’s a dream come true for me," he added.
Upon arriving in Barcelona, he expressed his joy at finalizing the transfer before heading to join the England national team on June 1 for World Cup preparations.
Gordon had previously showcased his skills against Barcelona in the Champions League group stage, scoring for Newcastle in a 2-1 loss.
Interestingly, his signing may influence Barcelona's decision regarding Marcus Rashford's potential loan from Manchester United, especially as they are reportedly interested in Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez.
Gordon made the move to Newcastle from Everton in January 2023, where he has netted 39 goals in 152 appearances and has represented England 17 times, scoring twice.
