Vancouver, June 22: Mohamed Salah played a pivotal role in Egypt's comeback, scoring the crucial goal that led to a 3-1 victory over New Zealand, marking the nation's first win in the FIFA World Cup since their debut 92 years and 25 days ago.
Not only did Salah secure the winning goal, but he also made history as the first Egyptian to score in two different World Cup tournaments. At 34 years and 6 days, he became the oldest player to score for Egypt, surpassing Magdy Abdelghany's record from 1990.
Following a draw between Iran and Belgium earlier, Egypt now holds a two-point advantage in Group G as they approach their final group stage match.
New Zealand started the match with intensity at BC Place in Vancouver. After early threats from Sarpreet Singh and Elijah Just, Finn Surman put the All Whites ahead with a powerful header from a corner in the 15th minute.
This marked the first occasion Egypt found themselves trailing at halftime in a World Cup match.
As Egypt sought to equalize, Salah and Emam Ashour came close before the break, with Salah being denied by Max Crocombe just after halftime.
Egypt's goalkeeper, Mostafa Shobeir, made a crucial save to prevent New Zealand from extending their lead, stopping a flicked header from Callum McCowatt. Zico then leveled the score for Egypt with a free header in the 58th minute.
Just nine minutes later, Salah delivered the decisive goal with a precise low shot following a well-coordinated team play, igniting celebrations among his teammates. Trezeguet capped off the victory by scoring Egypt's third goal with eight minutes left in the match.
