Historic Derby Win for East Bengal FC

In a remarkable display, East Bengal FC triumphed over Mohammedan Sporting Club with a staggering 7-0 scoreline during the Kolkata derby in the Indian Super League 2025-26, held at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Monday. This victory not only sets a record for the largest margin between these two teams but also ties the record for the highest margin in ISL history, matching FC Goa's 7-0 win against Mumbai City FC in 2015. Following this match, East Bengal ascended to fourth place in the league standings, accumulating 11 points from six games, while Mohammedan SC remains at the bottom, still seeking their first points after five matches. Anwar Ali earned the Player of the Match title for his outstanding performance, which included scoring two goals.

East Bengal started the match with intense energy, quickly establishing their dominance. Their efforts bore fruit in the sixth minute when Anwar Ali, a center-back, unleashed a powerful left-footed shot from the left side, which slipped past Mohammedan's goalkeeper Padam Chettri and nestled into the bottom-right corner, giving East Bengal a 1-0 lead.

The lead was doubled in the 14th minute when a foul by Mohammedan's left back Sajjad Hussain on Miguel Figueira resulted in a penalty kick. Youssef Ezzejjari confidently converted the penalty, extending the lead to 2-0. East Bengal continued to press, with Edmund Lalrindika testing the Mohammedan keeper midway through the first half. Mohammedan had a fleeting chance in the 29th minute, but Md Fardin's shot was easily saved by Prabhsukhan Gill.

The match took a turn for the worse for Mohammedan when right back Joseph Lalmuanawma received a second yellow card, leading to his dismissal after conceding another penalty. Captain Saúl Crespo successfully converted the penalty in the 38th minute, pushing the score to 3-0. East Bengal nearly scored again before halftime, hitting the crossbar, and went into the break with a commanding 3-0 lead.

The second half saw East Bengal maintain their dominance. In the 54th minute, Ezzejjari scored his second penalty of the match, marking a unique moment as it was the first time a team scored three penalties in a single ISL match, following a foul on Miguel Figueira by Padam. Despite being a man down, Mohammedan attempted to fight back, with Juwel Mazumder missing a close-range opportunity in the 68th minute. East Bengal continued to threaten, with midfielder Lalhlansanga narrowly missing a header from an Anwar Ali cross.

The fifth goal came in the 75th minute when PV Vishnu scored from close range after a corner kick. Just four minutes later, Anwar Ali netted his second goal of the night with a composed left-footed shot from inside the box, assisted by Mahesh Naorem. The hosts capped off their extraordinary performance deep into stoppage time, as substitute Nandha Kumar scored in the sixth minute of added time, sealing a comprehensive 7-0 victory and securing three points in the Kolkata derby.
