Guadalajara, June 24: Colombia has secured its place in the Round of 32 for the FIFA World Cup 2026, achieving this milestone with a hard-fought 1-0 win against Congo at the Guadalajara Stadium on Wednesday.
Daniel Munoz scored the decisive goal in the second half, breaking through the defenses of goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi. This victory marks Colombia's second consecutive win in Group K, setting them up for a crucial match against Portugal next. Meanwhile, Congo still has a chance to progress if they can defeat Uzbekistan and other results favor them.
With this goal, Munoz has now netted two times in the FIFA World Cup 2026, matching his performance from the CONMEBOL Copa America 2024.
Congo's Edo Kayembe attempted a long-range shot that missed the target, while the first half was predominantly controlled by Colombia.
Mpasi made several key saves, denying attempts from Jhon Arias and Munoz, who had a goal disallowed for offside. Colombia continued to apply pressure, with Mpasi stopping shots from James Rodriguez, Luis Diaz, and Gustavo Puerta, according to FIFA reports.
Late in the first half, Congo posed a threat with Arthur Masuaku's cross just missing Yoane Wissa, who had previously scored against Portugal.
After halftime, Mpasi again showcased his skills, blocking a close-range effort from Diaz. The rebound fell to Arias, but his shot went wide through a crowded penalty area.
Colombia's persistence paid off when Munoz finally broke through, scoring with a deflected shot following clever play from substitute Jhon Cordoba.
Despite having two goals disallowed for offside, Colombia managed to withstand a late surge from Congo DR, ensuring their place in the top two of Group K ahead of their upcoming clash with Portugal.
