Wolfsburg, currently in 16th place, is set to face last-placed St. Pauli, while Heidenheim, sitting in 17th, will take on Mainz. All three clubs are vying for a chance to compete in a two-leg playoff against the third-placed team from the second division.

In this closely contested battle, Wolfsburg enjoys a three-goal cushion over both Heidenheim and St. Pauli.

While St. Pauli has struggled in recent weeks, Heidenheim, once considered doomed, is making a remarkable push for survival.

Just eight rounds ago, Heidenheim was trailing by 10 points from safety.

Heidenheim's coach, Frank Schmidt, expressed that the team's resurgence has created an exhilarating situation for their supporters. "We had been written off, and the upswing might come late, but hopefully not too late," he remarked, following a successful run that has seen them earn 12 points in their last seven matches.

Their recent 3-1 victory over Cologne has sparked hope within the squad. In that match, defender Jonas Fohrenbach played despite a broken nose, donning a protective mask, while midfielder Niklas Dorsch made a return after a concussion.

Heidenheim's CEO, Holger Sanwald, emphasized their fighting spirit, stating, "To give up isn't part of our DNA."

St. Pauli's coach, Alexander Blessin, acknowledged the benefits of being the team in pursuit, noting that it minimizes the chances for miscommunication. "But you have to take the pressure in a positive way," he added.
