Vancouver, June 27: Leandro Trossard netted two goals as Belgium triumphed with a decisive 5-1 win against New Zealand on Friday, securing the top position in Group G and advancing to the FIFA World Cup Round of 32.
Both Belgium and Egypt ended the group stage with five points, but Belgium claimed the top spot due to a superior goal difference. Egypt also progressed after a 1-1 draw with Iran, while Iran finished third with three points, leaving New Zealand at the bottom with just one point from their three matches.
Belgium started strong, nearly scoring in the 11th minute when Trossard's shot hit the post. Shortly after, a penalty was awarded for a handball by Finn Surman, but the decision was reversed after a VAR review determined his arm was in a natural position.
The breakthrough came in the 28th minute when Trossard tapped in a cross from Kevin De Bruyne, following a well-coordinated attack.
Five minutes into the second half, Trossard doubled the lead, expertly controlling another De Bruyne pass before volleying it home from close range.
New Zealand's first real chance came when Elijah forced Courtois into a low save, but Belgium quickly regained control. Trossard assisted De Bruyne, who scored with a low shot from the edge of the box, making him the oldest goal scorer for Belgium in World Cup history at 34 years old.
New Zealand managed to pull one back in the 84th minute with a powerful strike, but Belgium's substitutes sealed the match. Romelu Lukaku scored with a header, and Alexis Saelemaekers added a fifth goal in injury time.
Belgium will now advance to the Round of 32, where they will face one of the eight best third-placed teams, while New Zealand continues to seek their first World Cup victory.
