Istanbul, May 21: Aston Villa celebrated a significant milestone by securing their first European trophy in 44 years, clinching the UEFA Europa League title with a decisive victory over Freiburg, thanks to goals from Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Buendia, and Morgan Rogers.
This victory marks Villa as the 31st different team to win the UEFA Cup/Europa League and the sixth English club to achieve this feat. They join the ranks of new champions in recent seasons, following Atalanta in 2023/24 and Villarreal under Emery in 2020/21.
Unai Emery has made history as the first manager to win this tournament with three different clubs, all of which include 'villa' in their names: Sevilla (three titles), Villarreal, and now Villa.
Freiburg entered the match with hopes of claiming their first major title, while Villa aimed to end a 30-year wait for silverware.
With the stakes high, the match initially saw both teams struggle to find their rhythm amid the electric atmosphere at Beşiktaş Park, revealing early nerves.
After several missed opportunities, the game ignited thanks to a moment of brilliance from Villa's Youri Tielemans. In the 42nd minute, he connected with a precise cross from Morgan Rogers following a short corner, unleashing a powerful volley that left goalkeeper Noah Atubolu with no chance.
Freiburg's hopes were dashed further just before halftime when Emiliano Buendía, receiving the ball just outside the box, expertly shifted to his left foot and curled a stunning shot into the far corner, doubling Villa's lead with the final kick of the half.
In the second half, Villa's confidence surged, and Buendía was instrumental again, weaving down the left flank before delivering a cross for Rogers to finish easily at the near post, making it 3-0 just before the hour mark.
Villa nearly added a fourth when Amadou Onana's header from a John McGinn corner struck the post, concluding the scoring at three.
Despite Freiburg's commendable effort, they fell short but will look to rebound in the upcoming Conference League play-offs next season.
