Former England international Ashley Cole has emphasized the importance of players developing strategies to cope with online harassment and criticism, asserting that such pressures are inherent in high-level competition.
“If you cannot manage pressure, expectations, and demands, then this sport may not be suitable for you. Athletes must recognize that pressure is part of the job. To compete at an elite level, one must learn to channel negative energy, as this sport can be unforgiving,” Cole remarked during a discussion facilitated by JioStar.
Cole, who earned 107 caps for England, suggested that players overwhelmed by social media negativity might consider reducing their online presence.
“The solution is straightforward: avoid social media. If players find it challenging to cope with pressure and expectations, the answer is simple: don’t engage with it,” he advised.
“I use social media, but I tend to ignore the comments. Nowadays, there are numerous ways to disable comments, or players can limit their online time. It’s wise not to check social media immediately after or before a game if they wish to avoid abusive messages,” he added.
The Premier League Hall of Famer shared that criticism never impacted him during his playing career.
“During my playing days, nothing bothered me. No one could say anything that would distract me from my game. If I encountered negativity, I accepted it and continued to play,” Cole stated.
“Ultimately, if I disliked something, I simply wouldn’t read the newspaper or watch the news,” he concluded.
Cole, who rose through Arsenal's academy to become a first-team player at 18, won two Premier League titles and three FA Cups with the club, being part of the legendary unbeaten 2003-04 Invincibles team. He later joined Chelsea in 2006, where he secured another Premier League title, four FA Cups, the League Cup, the Champions League, and the Europa League.
Throughout his time at Chelsea, Cole worked under managers like Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti, and Roberto Di Matteo, each bringing unique approaches that benefited the players differently.
“Carlo was definitely someone the players needed after Mourinho, who was very structured and intense in our training. Carlo had a more relaxed demeanor,” Cole explained.
“Roberto, following Andre Villas-Boas, rekindled the joy of the game for the senior players, trusting them to resolve issues on the pitch,” he added.
Cole emphasized the necessity for players and coaches to adapt to each other’s styles.
Regarding Indian football fans organizing blood donation drives and charitable events to celebrate their teams' achievements, Cole remarked that football has the power to unite communities.
“I believe that sports, particularly football, serve as a significant force in bringing societies together. Many lessons from football apply to everyday life, such as overcoming challenges, maintaining strength, and fostering a strong work ethic and determination,” he noted.
“For Indian fans to dedicate their time to giving back to the community while supporting their football teams illustrates the unique impact of the sport,” he concluded.
