Alaaeddine Ajaraie's Impressive Return

GUWAHATI, Aug 12: Since rejoining NorthEast United FC, Alaaeddine Ajaraie has made a remarkable impact, netting six goals in just three matches. However, the Moroccan forward emphasizes that his legacy should be defined by his character rather than just his scoring record.

In an interview, Ajaraie expressed, “When I eventually leave India, I hope to be remembered as a good person rather than merely a talented footballer. That holds greater significance for me.”

During his initial tenure with the Highlanders, Ajaraie established himself as a formidable striker in the Indian Super League, amassing 23 goals and seven assists across 25 appearances, earning both the ISL Golden Boot and Golden Ball for the 2024-25 season.

After a loan spell with Indonesian club Persija Jakarta last season, the 33-year-old has returned to Guwahati and quickly found his scoring form. He achieved a hat trick in NorthEast United's 6-0 victory over Bodoland FC in their opening Durand Cup match and followed it up with two goals in a 4-1 win against Karbi Anglong Morning Star FC. He added another goal in a 3-1 triumph over FC1 in their latest group match.

Despite his scoring prowess, Ajaraie is keen to share the credit with his teammates.

“I owe everything to my teammates. I aim to maintain this momentum, stay motivated, and give my all in every game. The support from every player and staff member has been invaluable, and I am grateful for it,” he stated.

For Ajaraie, individual accolades take a backseat to the team's achievements.

“My focus is on continuous improvement, both personally and for the team. Winning is my priority, and whether I score or not, I want to contribute positively on the field. I believe we can have an even more successful season,” he remarked.

Even with his past successes, Ajaraie sees room for growth, and his aspirations extend beyond just scoring goals.

“First and foremost, I want to show respect to everyone, especially referees and fellow players. Setting a good example for fans is crucial. I never want to be remembered negatively. Staying humble, maintaining a positive outlook, and radiating good energy are my goals,” he added.

On the field, Ajaraie's philosophy is straightforward. He believes that focus is paramount for a striker.

“A striker must remain vigilant. Opportunities can be scarce during a match, but when they arise, you must be prepared. Consistent focus is essential,” he explained.

NorthEast United has kicked off their Durand Cup campaign strongly, but Ajaraie is aware that this is just the start of a lengthy season.

“This is merely the pre-season, and we have only played three matches. However, we have talented players, and the new foreign signings are impressive. I have faith in this team and believe we can surpass our previous performances,” he stated.

Ajaraie also acknowledged the role of coach Juan Pedro Benali in helping him reintegrate into the team and maximize his potential.

“He understands my strengths and knows what both I and the team require. He provides valuable advice before each match to benefit us both,” he noted.

After achieving individual accolades in his last ISL season, Ajaraie's current goal is clear.

“I aspire to win as many trophies as possible for the Highlanders,” he declared.

NorthEast United is competing in Group F of the Durand Cup, which is a crucial part of their preparation for the upcoming ISL season.
