Violent Incident at Pickleball Tournament

A pickleball tournament in Florida turned chaotic when a mother was accused of assaulting another player with a paddle after a dispute involving her child. Michele Bannister, aged 47, was taken into custody on May 31 following an altercation at Treaty Park in St. Augustine that resulted in significant facial injuries to another participant. She faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and providing false identification to law enforcement.

The conflict reportedly began over retrieving a ball during the match and escalated into a physical confrontation, as reported by local media citing an affidavit. The situation intensified after the match when the victim approached Bannister’s son to offer feedback on his performance.

Bannister intervened in the dispute and allegedly struck the man multiple times on the head with her pickleball paddle, according to investigators. Deputies noted that the victim sustained several cuts to his face and was bleeding profusely following the incident.

In her defense, Bannister claimed she was protecting her son. However, investigators determined that there was no immediate threat to anyone's safety at that moment.

Witnesses described the scene as chaotic. Pam Hatch, known as “Pickleball Pam” and an ambassador for USA Pickleball in North Florida, rushed to assist the injured player. "She probably got in six good whacks with the side of the paddle," Hatch recounted to Action News JAX. "She was being pulled off him as well. She was clearly upset; something triggered her reaction," she added.

Hatch further described the aftermath as distressing, stating, "There was blood everywhere. I helped the victim wring out a towel because it was a bloody mess." Having played with both individuals before, she expressed disbelief that the victim would provoke such a reaction, although she was unsure of the exact words exchanged.

The situation escalated when deputies arrived, as Bannister allegedly misidentified herself as "Aiyanna Lei" until officers verified her identity through her home address. The arrest report indicated that the paddle was considered a weapon capable of causing serious injury or death.

Bannister has pleaded not guilty to the charges and was released after posting an $8,000 bond. She is set to appear in court on July 28. Her attorney, Rosemarie Peoples, defended her actions, asserting that Bannister was merely protecting her son. "Michele Bannister is a mother, a nurse, and a model citizen," Peoples stated. "She is wrongfully accused; her actions were necessary to prevent a violent attack on her young son. I believe a jury will fully exonerate her for her courageous defense of her child." The incident has garnered significant attention within the pickleball community, where such disputes rarely escalate to violence. Legal proceedings are currently ongoing.
