FIFA World Cup 2026: Uncertainty Surrounds Broadcast Rights in India
FIFA World Cup 2026 Broadcast Dilemma
The highly anticipated FIFA World Cup 2026 is set to commence on June 11, captivating football enthusiasts worldwide. However, fans in India remain uncertain about where they can catch the action, as there has been no official announcement regarding the broadcasting or streaming of this prestigious tournament. Reports suggest that FIFA is looking for a staggering Rs 100 crore from Indian broadcasters for its media rights, with Rs 67 crore specifically allocated for digital streaming. JioStar's bid of Rs 25 crore for these rights was rejected by FIFA, as India's FIFA ranking does not place it among the top 100.
Dooradarshan, the national broadcaster, has proposed Rs 5 crore to air only the knockout stages of the tournament. Meanwhile, Sony has also withdrawn from the bidding process after determining that the sponsorship market was valued at only Rs 10-15 crore. This is largely due to the scheduling of matches, which will occur late at night or in the early morning according to Indian Standard Time. With major broadcasters stepping back, it appears that streaming platforms like YouTube Premium or Amazon Prime may emerge as the frontrunners for securing the official streaming rights for the FIFA World Cup 2026.
China Secures FIFA World Cup 2026 Broadcast Rights
China, another significant market alongside India, was also without confirmed broadcasters for the FIFA World Cup 2026. However, recent reports indicate that China Media Group (CMG), the parent organization of the national broadcaster, has successfully acquired the media rights for the tournament just weeks before it begins.
