FIFA Trophy Tour Kicks Off in India
New Delhi: In anticipation of the FIFA World Cup 2026, the iconic trophy has landed in India as part of its global tour, with the tournament commencing on June 11.
The trophy will be showcased in Delhi for two days before heading to Guwahati, Assam, during its three-day visit to India.
This marks the first time in nearly 12 years that the World Cup trophy has been in India, as part of its international tour organized by Coca-Cola, the official partner of the FIFA World Cup.
The unveiling ceremony featured former Brazilian World Cup champion Gilberto D'Silva and Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya.
Mandaviya expressed that the trophy's presence aims to inspire the youth of India to engage with football.
He stated, "We are here today to bring this trophy and the dream is to inspire many young kids, encouraging the next generation of players, both girls and boys, to achieve success in football, just as they have in cricket and other sports."
The government is committed to fostering a sports culture in a nation with the largest youth population globally.
Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, sports have become a national priority, with aspirations to position India among the top ten sporting nations by 2036.
Initiatives like the 'Fit India Movement' and 'Khelo India' are being implemented to promote fitness and grassroots sports development.
As India aims to become a developed nation by 2047, sports will play a crucial role in nation-building and empowering the youth.
Sanket Ray, President of Coca-Cola India and Southwest Asia, emphasized that sports are a significant pillar of national development.
He noted, "Coca-Cola's partnership with the FIFA World Cup aligns with the vision of Vikshit Bharat 2047, empowering young Indians to excel on the global stage."
Coca-Cola has been an official FIFA World Cup partner since 1978, actively promoting the event worldwide.
The trophy's global journey will cover 30 FIFA member associations, with 75 stops over 150 days, providing fans with a unique opportunity to connect with football.
Crafted from 18-carat solid gold and weighing 6.175 kg, the trophy features two human figures supporting the globe, a design that has been in place since 1974.
