Ticket Prices Soar for Portugal-Colombia Clash

The excitement surrounding the FIFA World Cup 2026 has reached unprecedented levels, particularly for the group-stage match between Portugal and Colombia. Tickets for this highly anticipated game are now being sold at prices that exceed the average ticket cost for the 2025 Super Bowl, the annual championship of the NFL.

Set to take place on June 27 in Miami, this match could potentially be Cristiano Ronaldo’s last World Cup appearance, making it a hot commodity among fans. Consequently, it has become one of the most sought-after tickets in the tournament's opening phase.

As reported by TicketData, the average resale price for this match is currently around $2,500, surpassing the average entry price of $2,109 for the upcoming Super Bowl. On FIFA’s official resale platform, ticket prices for the Portugal-Colombia match range from approximately $2,300 to an astonishing $5.75 million, not including FIFA's additional 15% fees for buyers and sellers.

The surge in ticket prices has compelled fans to spend more than they initially planned. For instance, Andy Loaiza, a 35-year-old airplane repair supervisor from Colombia, intended to pay $1,500 per ticket but ended up spending $8,650 for three tickets, averaging about $2,883 each, due to the fear of missing out.

FIFA has defended its pricing strategy, asserting that ticket and resale prices reflect broader market trends. The organization emphasizes that the revenue generated from the World Cup supports its mission as a nonprofit entity dedicated to football development in over 200 countries.

Loaiza expressed his feelings about the situation, stating, “I have to admit, the FOMO and the heat of the moment, I just got caught by it.” He added, “Honestly, I still think it’s crazy,” but justified his purchase by saying, “I love the national team so much.”

The venue for the Portugal-Colombia match has further fueled demand, especially considering the large Colombian community in Florida, which numbers nearly 500,000 residents.

During the 2024 Copa América final against Argentina, the fervor of Colombian fans was evident as thousands of ticketless supporters gathered outside Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium.

Ticket prices continue to fluctuate significantly across various platforms. For example, on SeatGeek, the World Cup opener between Mexico and South Africa at Estadio Azteca briefly surpassed the Portugal-Colombia match as the most expensive group-stage ticket, with prices reaching $2,771. Nevertheless, for many fans, rationality often takes a backseat when it comes to the World Cup.
