FIFA President Addresses Controversy Surrounding Balogun's Suspension
FIFA President's Statement on Balogun's Suspension
Gianni Infantino, the President of FIFA, has finally spoken out regarding the significant controversy surrounding the decision to impose a one-match suspension on Folarin Balogun. This ruling allows him to participate in the upcoming Round of 16 match for the United States against Belgium on July 6 at Seattle Stadium, despite having received a red card in the Round of 32 against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Infantino revealed that he received a call from USA President Donald Trump regarding this issue, but he emphasized that the conversation did not influence the independent committee's decision.
In a statement released by FIFA, Infantino reiterated the importance of FIFA's governance principles, stating, "FIFA’s judicial bodies operate independently and autonomously, applying the FIFA Disciplinary Code based on the relevant regulations and facts. Their independence is crucial for maintaining the credibility and integrity of football, which must always be upheld." He acknowledged that he often discusses World Cup matters with the U.S. President and confirmed that he explained the ongoing legal process involving FIFA’s independent judicial bodies during their conversation. Infantino expressed that he respects the decisions made by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, regardless of his personal opinions on them.
Trump's Comments on the Situation
Infantino's comments followed shortly after President Trump addressed reporters in a press conference at the Oval Office. Trump confirmed his conversation with the FIFA President and criticized the initial decision made by the referee, while also commending FIFA's final ruling. He asserted that it would have been unjust for the USA to compete without their top player.
